Cole came to Boulder for a master’s degree in geology, stayed for the climbing and joined Basecamp as a front-desk employee in 2017. Within a year he was setting, and since 2020 he has led the setting crew.
He and his two setters strip and reset a section of the gym every week, so no climb stays up more than about ten weeks. Cole is particular about flow and about making problems that feel hard in a good way. He teaches the monthly Lead Climbing Clinic and coaches adults one-on-one.
He also teaches the Learn to Set workshop once or twice a year, so if you’ve ever wanted to know how the holds get there, ask him.
